WENDOVER.

COMPLIMENTARY DINNER TO A RETURNED SOLDIER.

On Thursday evening a complimentary dinner was given at the Red Lion Hotel by Pride of Wendover Lodge of Odd Fellows to Bro. T. CARTER, formerly treasurer of the Lodge, who has served in South Africa for the past two years in the Royal Engineers, and has recently returned from the front. A large company partook of the excellent fare provided by Host J.S. Holland. The chair was occupied by the Vicar (Rev. A. Smith), Mr Alfred Payne being vice-chairman ……

The usual loyal toasts having been honoured, Mr Bushell gave “The Imperial Forces” in suitable terms. – Quartermaster-Sergt. Holland, in replying, said they never fear that there would be any danger to this country whilst they had an Army such as they had now. (Applause). There was no soldier in the world equal to the British infantryman. He had seen more of their guest than anybody else from Wendover whilst he was in South Africa, and he could assure them that as a member of the Royal Engineers he had plenty to do, as it was the hardest-worked branch of the service. (Applause). …….

The Chairman then said they came to the toast of the evening, “The health of Bro. T. CARTER”, to whom it was the object of that gathering to give a hearty welcome. They had thought a great deal of all the gallant men who had been out in South Africa, but especially of those from that parish, and amongst them their guest, whom they were delighted to welcome home once more, and for whom they had such a deep feeling of respect and esteem. He therefore had great pleasure, in their name, in presenting him with a token of their goodwill, which they had no doubt he would appreciate and hand down to his family. (Applause). He could assure Bro. CARTER that they were pleased to see him amongst them in good health, and he wished him every prosperity. (Applause and musical honours).

The present consists of a massive cable pattern gold chain, with an Odd Fellows badge in gold and enamel as a pendant, which was supplied by Bro. H.J. Tooley, of Aylesbury. It bore the inscription on the obverse – “Presented to Bro. T. Carter by his Lodge”.

Bro. CARTER, in response, said the kindness and heartiness of their welcome almost overwhelmed him. He could not but appreciate their kindness, for almost everyone had done something, either directly or indirectly, for his family and himself since he had been away, which had been rather a long spell. ……. He thanked them one and all for this handsome present, which should be handed down in his family, and always treasured as a token of their esteem. (Applause).
