Presentation to Soldiers at Widdrington.
At a concert recently held in the village schoolroom, Widdrington, an interesting presentation was made to Private J. GARVAN, 2nd Lancashire Fusiliers, and Private J. MURRAY, Royal Scots Fusiliers, who have returned from long and active service in South Africa. The Lancashires served under General Buller on the Tugela, and the regiment suffered severely on Spion Kop. The Royal Scots served in the advance through the Orange Free State and the Transvaal, and took part in many battles and skirmishes. Major Crawford, Morpeth, made the presentation in an able and eloquent speech, giving to each of the soldiers a gold albert and medal, suitably inscribed. The recipients having returned thanks the concert was resumed. Songs were sung by Messrs Smith, Gowens, Carr, Richardson, and Beeston. The Widdrington String Band, under the leadership of Mr E. Urwin, played selections in excellent style. At a subsequent meeting a silver-mounted pipe was presented to Messrs GARVAN and MURRAY by the chairman, Mr F.R. Urpeth. The pipes were purchased with the balance from the concert. The alberts and medals were supplied by Messrs Samuel and Co., Newcastle.
