PRESENTATION TO A WOODHOUSE CORPORAL.
An interesting gathering took place last evening at the White Rose Inn, Woodhouse, for the purpose of making a presentation to Corporal Geo. W. SINGLETON, of the 2nd West Yorkshire Regiment, a son of Mr Singleton, late shorthand master at the Yorkshire College. The young soldier was twice wounded in the course of his fourteen months’ active service in South Africa, and has recently been invalided home, and the proceedings were the outcome of a subscription among his old companions and friends in Woodhouse to recognise in some tangible form their appreciation of his services at the front. The presentation was made by Alderman Thomas Hannam, who, in tendering for SINGLETON’s acceptance a handsome gold albert, with medal pendant suitably inscribed, expressed his pleasure at being associated with an event which testified to the loyalty of Woodhouse, and to the fact of a Woodhouse lad having honourably upheld the traditions of his race. Corporal SINGLETON having acknowledged the compliment paid him, saying he would treasure the gift as a proof that the people among whom he had been brought up believed he had done his duty as a soldier and an Englishman, a vote of thanks was passed to Alderman Hannam, on the proposition of Mr V. Singleton, seconded by Mr Wilkinson. The proceedings throughout took the form of a smoking concert, presided over by Mr J. Parfitt, and a capital vocal and instrumental programme was ably carried out by Messrs G. Jackman, H. Chambers, A. Geldard, Wright, Parsons, Wilkinson, Wood, Baxendall, and Bucknell, and a glee party, comprising Messrs Green, Elgie, Thackrah, and Morris. Mr E. Glover Bingham discharged the duties of accompanist, and contributed materially to the enjoyment of a very pleasant evening.
