Mr James Pow, who until recently had been pupil teacher for a number of years, was the recipient of a very handsome and serviceable travelling bag, the gift of the teachers and scholars of the Wyndham school. Mr Pow acknowledged the gift in a neat, pithy and humorous speech. The occasion was also availed of to present Saddler-Corporal McKAY, and Trooper BEANGE with a gold Maltese Cross, suitably inscribed, the gift of the residents, in commemoration of their return from the Transvaal war. Trooper BEANGE, owing to a slight indisposition, was prevented from being present, but Saddler-Corporal McKAY suitably responded and thanked the donors for their much valued gift.

A social was tendered Corporal John GIBB (Fourth Contingent) in Atkinson's Hall on Friday night, Mr G.G. Fyfe in the chair. There was a large attendance and speeches were delivered by the Rev. Mr Aitken, and Messrs McNab, M.H.R., Fraser, Milne, W.L. Mitchell, Cushnie and Walker. Songs were sung by Mrs Allan, Misses M. and B. Dodd, Messrs Macpherson, Smart, Walker, A. Lumsden, M. Raymond and J. Golding, and a recitation was given by Mr W.J. Winter. Mr McNab, on behalf of the residents, presented Corporal GIBB and Trooper H. BEANGE each with a gold Maltese cross, suitably inscribed. This belated function, it was explained, was owing to the fact that Corporal GIBB bad only recently returned to the colony, he having been invalided to the Old Country from South Africa.

WYNDHAM.
Social. — A very enjoyable social was held in the Zealandia Hall on Friday evening to welcome back Corporal J. GIBB, one of the local representatives in the fourth contingent. Corporal GIBB, who was very ill in South Africa with dysentery, was invalided home to the old country, where he spent some months. He has only recently returned to the colony, quite restored in health. There were over 200 people at the social, which was presided over by Mr G.G. Fife (chairman of Wyndham Town Board). During the evening Corporal GIBB was presented with a gold Maltese cross suitably inscribed, by the residents of Wyndham. At the close of the social a dance was held, which was also well attended.
