The design of the QSA is familiar now but there was some debate when a commemorative medal was decided upon about how it should look.
From the Daily Mail, 12 Sep 1900: "The medal to be awarded to troops for the present campaign in South Africa had now been definitely decided upon. It will be the most expensive and most ornate issued by the War Office in recent years. The medal itself is a silver five-pointed star, with a gold centre surrounded by a ring of bronze, on which the words "South Africa" appear in raised letters. In the centre of all this is a miniature of the Queen. The ribbon is of four colours, a stripe of Khaki in the centre, two of white, and one each of red and blue. There will probably be a bar granted for each important engagement."
