(See notes under 83rd Battery).
The battery was present at the review at Koomati Poort on 28th September 1900, and returned to Pretoria early in October. In November 1900, when it became apparent that De Wet was to attempt the invasion of Cape Colony, four guns of the 85th Battery were with other troops railed from the Transvaal to the south of the Orange River Colony. They took part in the very exciting chase by General Charles Knox, one memorable incident in which was the great difficulty experienced in getting the guns over the flooded Caledon. In 1901 two guns accompanied the column of Colonel Crabbe in Cape Colony, and two guns were with Colonel Greenfell's column near Pietersburg, in the Northern Transvaal (see Lord Kitchener's despatch of 8th July).
