Town Guards

I have a QSA medal engraved 'S.G. Rattle. Merchant Marine' with my grandfather's WW1 medals. Can anybody pleae help or advise me on how to identify the ship, rank or number of my grandfather during that campaign? His WW1 service was as '8299 Pte S.G. Rattle. 3rd Btn Royal Fusiliers'. denis484.
