Just also wondering if he has previous service, as having that rank in the 4th battalion could mean pervious service, depending on his age at the time, just a thought.

I've got his service papers and he served from 1884 to 1903. At home most of the time with a few years in India and of course time in South Africa

The services of the 4th Battalion, The Prince Albert's (Somersetshire Light Infantry) were the following: volunteered for foreign service on December 4, 1899. Their strength on embarking for South Africa was 27 officers, 361 N.C.O's and men, Colonel W. Long commanding.

On arrival East London, April 2 1900, furnished details for guarding from East London to Queenstown, with Maxim gun and detachment at Burghersdorp.

Dec., 1900., four officers and 200 men proceeded to Stormburg Garrison, E Company to Queenstown and Bowkers Park.

March, 1901, formed Garrison at Cathcart, threatened by Boers. May, 1901.

May, 1901, B Company to Wonderboom and Bamboo Siding, D Company to Bushman's Hoell.

Oct, 1910, J Company employed on blockhouse line, Sterkstroon section, B Company Bailey town.

Returned from South Africa on 14 May 1902.

He came home on 11.10.01, so he's come home early for some reason, probably illness I suppose, although there is nothing on his papers
