Good morning to you too Mike, you did indeed give me very good advice, thank you and thanks also to Justin and Frank.
Now that's what I call a result.
Kind regards

Do you own the medal, I just assumed you did, upon looking at Burleigh's The Natal Campaign, he states that just forty five rank and file from the regiment were present on the day.

HI, I have 1 and 2 volumes of the Durban light infantry, which gives a good account of the attack on the train, It also mentions quit a few names of soldiers present, on page 64 it states; Pt. J Crow of the Durban Light Infantry could never forget being shaken by the hand and called a brave fellow by Winston Churchill. regards Saxon.

Hi Frank
I don't have the medal it belongs to an old friend who has owned for about thirty years. He cannot remember if the "Coin & Medal News" article came with the medal or whether he stumbled across it later, but he has done no further research because he was told that because it was to a South African Regiment it would be impossible to 'find out anything about the man'. Apparently not so.
And Saxon
Many thanks for the information, but Justin Davies just beat you to it, but thank you anyway.
Best wishes

Now that is a shame, I just assumed that you did, but, upon reading your original post again last night, it did appear to me that perhaps you might not.
Regarding the article, as I said to you, it did sound as though it had merely been transcribed from a book, as Justin has shown, you really cannot overstate the importance of any good regimental history.
It is certainly possible to take this man further, he was a serving member of the Natal Volunteers, but, you would have to look in Pietermaritzburg.
That is a valuable medal, tell your friend to look after it.
