Hi Frank
Many thanks for the additional information. I will certainly endeavour to get my friend to photograph the medal although I am not sure quite how competent he is with a camera but I will see what can be done. Watch this space.
Kind regards
Pelling

Justin,

does your book say how many DLI were involved and how many were captured?

Thanks Iain

Iain,

Martin writes that there were 45 men of "C" Company of the Durban Light Infantry under Captain J. S. Wylie and Lieutenant W. Alexander. These figures are taken in turn from Bennet Burleigh's The Natal Campaign

Martin lists the DLI casualties as 2 killed, 1 died of wounds, 25 wounded, 19 captured, of whom eight were wounded.

Thanks Justin,

for some reason, often the DLI are played down and the Dublin Fusiliers only are mentioned in the Chieveley incident, perhaps because they were a Colonial and not a "British unit." I recently read only a few DLI were involved, but 45 is a quarter of the troops involved.
