I was in the PMB Archives today copying enlistment registers for the Natal Mounted Police when I came across a box full of Boer POW registers for Natal and Cape Town including Green Point. There were approx 8 such registers and also a register of Boers found guilty of High Treason which included the sentences imposed.

I have attached the front page of one of the registers and the first page to show what it looks like.

I took over 800 photo's today in a 6 hour time frame but it is very heavy going so I will have to get a hand scanner and do the POW registers when I am next in PMB.

I was very pleased to read that you have copied the NMP/NP enlistment registers, something that has been long overdue. Your archive of records must be the best there is for those of us who share your interests. Are you thinking of giving up your day job!?

Hi
I have the full set of the PoW Registers (more than 32500 names) in photocopy and in in a database on my computer. For the latter one I have 4 search fields : Name, PoW number, Date of Capture and Place of Capture. Unfortunately I can only combine 2 fields at a time when searching.
I worked through the total base many years ago and corrected a number of spelling mistakes and eliminated duplications

Hello Henk

Would you know if your POW data is the same as that offered on-line by the museum in Bloemfontein or is there more than one source for Boer POW information?

Hello Brett,

I have copied two enlistment registers so far, there are still a few to go. I have copied those who enlisted from September 1886 through to March 1902.

Much more work to go so will have to carry on with the day job a while longer !!

Henk,

These POW registers are also 32500 odd names long so I would suggest that they are the same as those you have already worked with.

David,

It was a superb day. I am so used to the Cape Archives which is far larger than the PMB facility however, what a well run and efficient set up. It was a very good day all round B) .
