Hi all

I'm trying to find out where the 1/Rifle Brigade was in 1902? I have a relative who arrived in South Africa from the 3rd Battalion on the North West Frontier and was posted to the 1st Battalion on 3 March 1902. Any information at all on the Battalion's service history and movements at this period would be most appreciated.

Thanks

Jonathan

Jonathan,

Stirling's history of the RB is very quiet on what the regiment was up to in 1902. 1901 is a little vague too: "Throughout 1901 the battalion was generally in the neighbourhood of the Transvaal - Natal Railway. In January and February a lot of marching was done, sometimes with a column, sometimes taking convoys to Ermelo and other places for other columns. After February they were chiefly engaged in watching the railway, having latterly about forty miles in safe keeping."

Stirling does not give a return date for the 1st RB but I think this was after the war ended in May 1902.

101 mem of the 1sr RB arrived back in the UK in August 1902 and another 99 men left later that month ( www.angloboerwar.com/other-information/8...ing-records-aug-1902 ).

None of which answers your query though.

What is the name and number of your relative?

Regards
David

Hello David.

I've recently returned to this forum after way too long a break. I'd long given up on getting any answers to my initial post so thank you.

His name was Arnold Tetlow and his number was 3958.

Many thanks again.

Jonathan
