My great Grandfather from what I have been able to discern served with the Victoria and St George Rifles in South Africa prior to coming to Canada. Name P.F. Richards I obtained this information from his attestation papers in 1914 as well as an old newspaper clipping extremly faded. I have not been able to find from here much information on this regiment or its service. Also according to the clipping he won a medal for shooting and was awarded the South Africa medal with 4 clasp. I have been unable to find any info from here on this.
My question is, since I am a new person to this search, where do I begin to look in the U.K. for information?? Someone reliable?? or can I do this online??

Any information is greatly appreciated, thank you very much

Hello Chris.....

I am sure that you know already that the unit your grandfather's unit was as listed below.....

1st Middlesex (Victoria and St George’s) Volunteer Rifle Corps (previously 4th Volunteer Battalion, The King's Royal Rifle Corps (KRRC)

The KRRC served in South africa (in their Volunteer Service Companies) and a number of the people could have also served in the Imperial Yeomanry but I have already checked and there are no P.F. Richard or Richards......

There is another list and that is the City Imperial Volunteers (CIV).....

Good Luck in your search.....

Hi Mike: Actually you just gave me more information that I have had for he past ten months on the unit. Thank you very much.

I did some more checking with my father today and he dug some of my late mothers papers ( I may have misrepresented Richards as my grandfather actually he was my great grandfather) Percy Richards passed away in Calgary and is buried in the old Union cemetary having served in WWI in the 10th Field Battalion. Now in some of my mothers papers here is the following written " 9th Bn Coy O Queen Victoria's London" 6 Apr 1908 Number 168. So is that the same regiment as the Kings Royal Rifles?? and what is the 168 a squadron number then???. All of this is in pretty shaky handwriting and was a photocopy of looks like part of a letter
