The story of the 1st Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, during World War I and the incident that led to the dismissal from the army of Lieutenant-Colonels Elkington and Mainwaring is told in the following book:
'Seek Glory, Now Keep Glory' by John Ashby. Solihull: Helion & Co (2000).

The subsequent fates of the two men are also recorded. Elkington joined the French Foreign Legion and was awarded the Medaille Militaire and Croix de Guerre (with Palm).

Mainwaring was not so fortunate and the "stigma of his dismissal followed him to his grave. He had been a sick man for some time. Any attempt to re-enlist in the army would very likely have been unsuccessful due to his age, even had he been fit." (Ashby [2000]: 105). He died on 11/10/1930 aged 66, and the 'Sussex Express'of the following day published an obituary that is reproduced in Ashby's book. Ashby gives some other details of the last 14 years of Mainwaring's life.

I should have mentioned that Ashby's book also has some information on Mainwaring's early life and there are two prewar group photographs that include Mainwaring.

Dear Brett.

Is this a rare, out of print book? I am getting antique dealers as sites to go to with 1 copy used. Do you think it may be online? Probably not. When was it written?

Thank you!
Margaret

Thank you, you are too kind. Let me try the site you suggested and if it doesn't pan out perhaps I could borrow your copy? I would love to see a picture of my grandfather, AE Mainwaring.
I'm interested in your opinion of the decision to courtmarshall the officers for cowardice. Whose decision is it to surrender, and what are the consequences of such an action?
