On the first page of the QSA and KSA medal rolls for each unit is stamped a small box containing 6 pieces of information:

Number AG2
Received in AG2
Note for Army List
Roll checked by
To POO
Issued

On the rolls, the details next to these field is hand written, for example:


The reference is used where a QSA recipient is listed on one roll but the medal is issued off another roll or there is an entry on a different roll. Sometimes the name of the other roll is given and sometimes just the AG2 reference number:





I am seeking to compile a list of AG2 numbers and will add these to the site. If anyone has information linking medal rolls and AG2s, please contact me.

Could you please tell me what AG2 numbers represent?
Also, is it possible to get an estimate of how long someone served in the Life Guards from the clasps noted on the Medal Roll. What period would cover the campaigns of Johannesburg, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen, and the Relief of Kimberley?

If you look at the qualifying periods for the clasps awarded you can see that Wheatley of the LG served until at least 29 July 1900.

The Register of the Anglo-Boer War ( www.boerwarregister.com ) shows Wheatley of the Scottish Horse and Brabant's are one and the same.

Have tried to find service papers for Wheatley of the LG? The medal roll may indicate if he was discharged in SA or not.

Thanks for the link. I have used the excellent services of Audrey Portman before. In fact, she may have found some of these records for me.

I believe all the soldiers that I listed after the one in the Life Guards are the same individual.
I wanted to see if AJ Wheatley (1919) 1st Life Guards was the same man.
The medal roll give no information on the date or place of discharge.
Although the timings would appear to permit that they are the same man, I've since found that 1919 Trooper Wheatley A J, 1st Life Guards was recommended for the Long Service and Good Conduct (LSGC) Medal on Jul 01 1915, so it may not be the same person after all, unless they recognized continued service with other regiments.
The 1st Life Guards were in Ypres (April-May 1915) and Loos (September-October 1915). My AJ Wheatley left South Africa with the 2nd South Africa Infantry to join the fight in Europe in August or October of 1915. He was promoted to 2nd Lt in the Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) in 1917.
