You would not normally go from actual service out on the veldt in the SAMIF before then joining the IY, though certainly not impossible, it would have been most unusual, I looked just once for any available folio in WO128 and as there appeared to be none I did not look again, but, I'm certainly not surprised by Justin's news other than he had served in the Volunteers.

You make a very valid point about how unusual it would be to find a man who served in the colonial regiments or SAMIF then enlisting in the Yeomanry. Unless they had returned to England for some reason, where the IY recruited, the pay of the SAMIF was much higher than the IY being 5 shillings a day, rising to 8 for the BVC and 10 for Steinaecker's Horse. Each SAMIF regiment had a recruiting desk at the Durban and Cape Town ports!

Yes indeed, but, don't forget "poor" old Colonel Nash, certainly from memory, he only paid his lads four and a half shillings! :(
