Dear ABW Forum members worldwide;
I would like help in finding out more about 228 Corpl WR Buchan who served in the SAC.
I recently acquire his medals from a dealer in Cape Town;
BWM impressed A.B. W R Buchan RNVR impressed
QSA 2 bar CC& OFS and
KSA 2 bars both medals impressed Corpl R Buchan
Could these medals all belong to the same recipient?
All information will be greatly appreciated.
My attempt to scan the 3 medals was unsuccessful.
Tkx in anticipation :)

Hello Evyn

Very likely to the same chap - please advise if both the Boer War Medals are impressed to the S.A.C. If so they are unusual as the SAC chaps normally only qualified for the QSA with date clasps which are the ones found on the KSA. He could have earned the KSA with another regiment hence my question.

Apropos his BWM - a single award to the RNVR is unusual but not impossible as they normally came as a trio or as a pair. A single entitlement (id there are no medals missing) would mean that he saw only home service in WWI and never left the borders of the country.

The complete SAC file is available in South Africa via a researcher and will be either in the OFS or Transvaal Archives - they are usually very informative. The BWM points to a file in Pretoria, again available via a researcher, but could be only a record card.

Regards

Rory

Hi Rory
When I bid on the group it occurred to me that they were something of a novelty.?
Yes, both QSA & KSA medals are impressed "SAC"
I'll be asking researcher Dewald to do the checks in the Pretoria archives.
Do you know what the rank abbreviations "AB" refers to on the WW1 RNVR BW Medal?
Do you have SAC medals too?
regards and grateful tkx

Hello Evyn.....

The rank "AB" is Able-Seaman......

There is a book called "No Colours, No Drums" which is a history of the SAC from a Canadian point of view.....

Some SAC badges and Medals......

Hello Evyn,

340 A.B W.R Buchan served on the Afrikander which was a depot ship, and if memeory serves, operating out of Simons Town and around False Bay. His service card will be in Pretoria.
