Not many of the DCMs for the Boer War have citations. His DCM appeared in the London Gazette on 27 Sep 01 amongst many others. Sometimes these awards can be linked to mentions in despatches and there are some relevant entries in the unindexed WO108 series. I believe most DCMs cannot be linked back to a definitive event. Many were issues to NCOs, as in this case, for continued good service.

It would be worth seeing if you can find any records or accounts of G Battery to identify an mentions of your relative.

Contact the Library of the RA and ask for a copy of the battery's digest of service. It may mention a specific act.

I have seen these for the Great War in TNA but didn't realise there are digests for the Boer War. Can you tell me what detail they contain please?

They are highly variable - barebones of service "marched here, marched there, fired 50 rounds etc.." Not many casualties listed, some honours & awards (with and without detail).

It is pot luck really, but one digest helped me identify a DCM as a fighting award.
