Hi all,

I am searching for information on my great grandfather John Moore was born in 1877.

I understand he was in the Natal Mounted Rifles (& then South African Mounted Rifles) and may have fought in the Boer war.
I understand that in 1913 married (Helene Kokkinn Ashwell) in Durban, South Africa. He died sometime between 1921 and 1942.His son Terence was killed on active service in Tobruk in 1942.

Is there any where I could find his military records? I am especially curious to know where he was born.

Kind regards
TJ

I could not find a John Moore on the NMR roll for the Boer War, but there was a W H Moore who joined the regiment after the Siege of Ladysmith was lifted.. I will do some more searching and post again if I find anything that might be useful.

Hello TJ,

I can tell you that John Moore passed away in 1931 in Natal. His DN and estate papers are in the Pietermaritzburg Archives. These will show place of birth etc.

Hi there,

Is there a way of finding his Natal Police records (he formerly was of the Natal Mounted Rifles).

He died a pensioner of the Natal Police force in 1931?

Of key interest to me is his exact Date of Birth.

Best regards
TJ

Hello TJ,

His exact date of death/birth and occupation prior to death as well as next of kin etc will be noted on the Death Notice which is to be found at the reference I posted earlier.

I won't be in PMB for a while but perhaps another member will be and could take a few pictures for you.

Here is an example of the pages of the Natal Police enlistment registers that I have. Sadly your chap is not in this book so a bit of trawling would be required.

The second picture follows on from the first which has NOK details etc.You will also see that there is not really an abundance of information
