I am preparing a presentation for the Talana Conference in July on the topic of Boer War casualties. Most of the presentation centres on the imperial casualties for which there is good data.

In the introduction, I have a slide showing overall casualties, on both sides, military and civilian.

I am having trouble identifying a number for Boer Military deaths (killed and DOW).

Using Appendix 20 in Maurice's History , I have come to an approximation of 5,654.

Does anyone know of more accurate sources?

Also, I have not seen any data on those Boer Military personnel who died of disease.

David,

Sorry to hear that.

Indian casualties are also not very prominent/clear in the statistics. In Appendix 17 of Maurice's Vol 4 History, he lists the imperial units, Militia, IY, CIV etc and then the Australian, Canadian, NZ and SA contingents. Before the final category of surgeons and civilian in military employment, he has 'other Contingents' which total 33 of all casualty types.

I was very surprised to read that your proposed contribution was turned down. If the conference was being held in the old South Africa in the Orange Free State, where Indians were unwelcome, it might have been understandable. It would be interesting to know the reason.

It was proposed that the conference would concentrate on WW1. Hence my surprise that Imperial Deaths during the Boer War was to be covered.
