My gt-grandfather, Charles Edward McKenna held the rank of Quartermaster Sergeant in 6th Company 4th Batt.IY.
The only information I can find is a transcription from Findmypast.
I cannot find attestation, service or discharge records.
What I would like to know is how long would he have had to serve to reach the rank of QS.
Is there a chance that he served with another regiment before the IY and if so how would I find out.
Would be grateful for any help or advice.
Regards
Bemac

If there is no folio available on line, a manual search in WO128 at Kew would be the way to go, I would certainly expect it to bare fruit, although it is not a complete series, if his papers have survived, they may give you an indication of the period he attained his rank.

Hello Bemac

FmP should have his IY papers - series WO 128. For many years I have suspected they are missing papers for some reason, despite asking FmP have failed to come up with a reason or a solution.

Handily FmP provide a browse function and they are missing, at least, boxes 94-98 of IY service papers. Your GGF's number is 30564, which is in box 95.

This screen shot is from The National Archives website showing the box number (piece) for service number 30564:

and this from FmP showing theyt jump from box (piece) 93 to box 99:

Before you pay for a researcher Kew ask FmP where the service papers for WO128/95 are.

In my experience senior NCOs in the IY had previous regular experience or considerable Yeomanry experience. Have tried to search for any military papers on FmP using birth year etc..?

All the best
