Matatiele European Reserve

It is a unit I had never heard of before, have read the write up in the Unit Information section......

The man I am interested in is E. Groom.......

Edwin Groom served in the East Griqualand Mounted Rifles and the Matatiele European Reserves, which was part of the East Griqualand Field Force, his medal was issued in 1911, they appear to have been some seventy one enlisted as rank and file, as well as their bugler, a very scarce and pleasing medal.

You will have to do some detective work!!
Roll on WO100/247, p63-65.
Very closely written, bad copy on microfilm.
Just over 70 originally issued of which the greater number were returned and some were re-issued. Lots of ticks, scribbles and notes to decipher on a black and white copy!!.
I had the QSA to Lt D B Menne, but disposed of that in 2005

Hello Mike,
If you require clarification or a transcription of those folio, let me know, a nice medal to have, the events that took place in Griqualand are very interesting and are all too often forgotten, eclipsed by the rest of the campaign, there was also a Native Reserve.
