I was working through the medal roll for the Kaffrarian Rifles today as part of the Wepener research. I have often seen the annotation 'Retd' in the left column to denote those medals for whom the recipient could not be traced.

Presuming no one came forward to claim the medal, were most returned to the Mint and melted back down again?

Good Morning David.....

I have a QSA and WW1 trio to a man who lost his medal during WW1 and he applied for a replacement.....

The medal that was sent to him in 1922 was an original QSA with ghost dates, nothing special about that, but the medal was named in WW1 style instead of the normal style.....

There had been a previous name on the medal but it had been neatly removed....

This is a possibility of what happened to the returned medals.....
