I checked the National Maritime Museum to see whether they hold any pictures of him but failed to find a match.

Saw this on Ebay myself- I think it is my first sighting of a Naval Officers QSA and the detail on it. By the way what are the clasps on the war medal miniature-they should give a good indication of service-a bit of a personal favorite of mine these naval war medal miniatures.

Good Afternoon George......

The medals arrived today, Jiffy Bag Dance.......

Here are the bars on the Naval BWM as per your request:

Hi Mike,
This is still the first QSA to a naval officer I have sighted-it appears to be named in a very similar style to China's to the Navy-which would make a great deal of sense and thanks for the detail of the miniature medal-fantastic stuff

Without ruining your expectations of the research on Lt. Hughes, W.H.C., the Fevyer and Wilson roll shows your man as being on Extended Period with HMS Barracouta and clasps as indicated by yourself. Nineteen such entitlements from a crew of 339 souls.
My RN reference says that HMS Barracouta was a 3rd Class cruiser. Peter Singlehurst's "Afloat and Ashore" has an interesting digest of the services of this Cruiser on the station. Looks like your man served during the Second Commission.
George
There seems to be some variation in the naming styles of RN QSAs; I have a seven clasp example to an AB with serif naming; plus others with the more-often-seen skeleton caps. Some time ago, I did a post on Assistant Paymaster A.C. Bere's (HMS Sybille) group including his QSA. The QSA is engraved in the style often seen on Officers' medals. I can post a pic of that naming if you wish.
Regards
IL.

Hi,
Thanks Linneyl I would be most interested to see some more of Officer naming styles-many years ago i had a 7bar naval QSA to a marine on the Monarch if I remember right- I had bought what allegedly was a renamed QSA/KSA to the RN. The KSA was definitely bogus but the QSA was an engraved named medals with 3 bars-you can imagine my delight to find it was actually 7 Bar medal. But it was moved on nearly 20 years ago for a good profit. Should have kept it I know.
