I am looking at his age of death, 48 in 1916 gives a birth year around 1868. He is on the SAGS roll for clasp 1877-8 with rank Private which would make him 10, surely too young an age to be serving with the CMR?

I had noticed that but he is the only chap with that permutation of names that fits the bill. My ha'penny's worth - it is him and his age on enlistment was properly over estimated as was his age at death, vastly underestimated. You will probably find that his real age in 1879 was about 17.

That does make sense. I am presuming the ages stated are correct and this is often not the case. There can't be too many men called Essex Percival Austin either!
