As part of my Wepener research, I am looking for more detailed information on the Kaffrarian Rifles beyond the medal and nominal rolls.

Does anyone know if their attestation papers survived?

Does the Buffalo Volunteer Rifles Military Museum warrant a visit?

I have been looking at whether it is feasible to drive between Durban and East London and see the distance is 660km. Is the estimate of 8.5 hours realistic?

The area around East London reads like a who's who of Town Guards and local units.

Has anyone visited the museum since it re-opened a year ago?

Are there not some wartime attestations in WO126/74 at Kew?

Frank,

There are some papers in 74 but not very many.

An interesting finding with the Brabant's Horse attestation papers was that only the papers for the men who were discharged in Cape Town have survived. Looking at the Brabant's Horse nominal roll, men were discharged in many places but I guess these papers were not collated and were probably lost. It may be the same with the Kaffrarian Rifles.

Kind regards
David

Hello David,
I would be very surprised if the pre war Kaffrarian Rifles attestations are still extant, I would think they went the same way as almost everything else within the Cape Government Volunteers.
