Impressed naming does seem to be the way with all TG QSAs but there is some variation in the abbreviations used for Town Guard, especially for the larger units such as Kimberley. Preseumably the result of multiple batches sent for naming.

I would like to collate images of the TG naming on QSAs if that was possible.

I will continue west with the mapping of Town Guards. It will take about 30 hours to go through all the TG pages to ascertain, with reasonable accuracy, the net number of awards to each.

I wanted a high resolution map as the basis for this work but I did not have one. The solution I found was to use the map from the Times History. As it has been folded for over a century, it scans poorly so my solution was to cut it into strips suitable for scanning at 300-600dpi. The strips are currently being pressed between the pages of my largest and heaviest book, a volume of the ILN. Once flattened it will take a few more hours to rejoin the strips in Photoshop.

I was speaking to someone in South Africa last year about maps. They has a large map of the SAGS battlefields on their wall. It looked fantastic. They said they had paid for the National Archives in London to scan one of their maps. The potential for a map without creases or damage at the fold intersections is certainly appealing. Has anyone else tried this?

This is an excerpt from the Dundee TG roll. Is this two or three men whose medals were returned?
