I am currently undertaking some research into Town Guards to determine how many medals were issued to the different units.

As part of this, I am also mapping the locations of the TGs. I will post the maps as they develop.

Trying out different ways to represent the number of medals issued to the unit, net of returns and those issued from other rolls.

That is really an excellent way of linking the TG's location and medal entitlement with naming style(s).

Plotting the number of medals issued to their geographical locations is a commendable exercise David. I know you are showing the Western Cape in your example, but please expand your reach to include all e.g. Natal, OFS etc.

I'm not sure that this will help with the naming style IL. What were your thoughts around that?

Here, I don't see too many TG QSAs (I only have 2xKTGs plus a "Talana" to Dundee RA) and I have sometimes thought that TG QSAs might exhibit naming variations; thin caps, square caps or engraved. Indeed, there might not be any naming style variations at all. I just don't know.

I hear you IL - I have about 50 TG QSA's to various units and all of them, including the officers, have identical impressed naming.

That doesn't mean that there aren't a few variations around that nobody has yet stumbled across.
