Royal Navy & Troopships 4 years 10 months ago #68025

I am interested in how Royal Navy personnel were transported to and from South Africa during the Boer War. I am assuming they were transported on Troopships too? Specifically I would like to find out how my great grandfather (176958 TH Olding) was transported there to join HMS Monarch and then returned home after. His RN Service Record shows the following:

  • Victory 1 - 26/07/1898 to 19/08/1898
  • HMS Monarch - 20/08/1898 to 14/10/1900
  • Duke of Wellington - 15/10/1900 to 17/12/1900
From this I'm assuming that the HMS Monarch dates are the dates he joined and left HMS Monarch in Simonstown? Would anyone be able to tell me on which Troopships he traveled to and from South Africa, any associated dates and the routes?

Many thanks.
