Would anyone have any information about this organization which had a 34mm bronze and enamel lapel badge ( of Austrian manufacture ) inscribed as per the heading above.
I presume it to have been an Austrian relief organization operating in Johannesburg during the early years of the Boer War
I have only ever seen one specimen of the badge

Is it spelt Hilfsverein?
I can't see mention of an Austro-Hungarian field ambulance, or other medical charity, in JC De Villiers' comprehensive 2-vol book on medical aspects of the Boer war; so I wonder if it was for non-medical assistance?

Deutsch Osterr(eich) Ungarische Hilfsverein fur Kriegsgevangene was functioning in WW1 as a relief organization, I assume the same was extant during the Boer War, and does not appear to be medical in nature, but rather an aid organization for prisoners or people of German, Autro-Hungarian descent.
