Thank you, I really appreciate this information.
There is some confusion as to whether it was Sgt Northway who was killed in the ambush of "Gat" Howard, or whether it was Sgt Douglas. Most accounts of the ambush that I have seen mention only one person being killed with Howard, but as Douglas and Northway are both shown as being killed at Rustplaats on the same day it would imply that they died in the same incident.
Not listed on the stele in the Garden of Remembrance at Wakkerstroom is Sgt J A Paterson who has a Headstone considerably larger than those of "Gat " Howard or Sgts Northway and Douglas which would suggest that it was sent out as part of a different shipment of Memorials to Canadians who died during the Boer War. His date of death is recorded as KIA 4 February 1901.
I there perhaps any information about Sgt Paterson?
My thanks for continuing to take an interest in this research project.

I sold the last three copies that I had at a Gun and Militaria show this weekend...... Since Mike Dorosz passed away 2 years ago there have not been any published with his signature in them as he signed every copy...... They show up occasionally on echobay will keep my eyes open for you......

Have not had a chance to work on Paterson will do as soon as I can......

The body of the Sergeant that was killed with Howard was his Orderly Sergeant Richard Northway, he was mortally wounded and also one of the Native Scouts.....

Sergeant Le Valle and Jeff Davis found the bodies.....

Mike

P.S. There was a skirmish after the bodies were found and that is when Douglas was killed and the Boer Camp was destroyed.....

Thank you, that confirms my understanding that it was Sgt Northway who was killed in the ambush. The additional information about Sgt Douglas is most helpful, and I look forward to learning information about Sgt Paterson if you are able to find anything about him.
