I have been sent this picture by a relative of the man on the left, David Herculaas Schlotz ,who lived at Farm Roodekop Ventersdorp/Potchefstroom Western Transvaal. The man on the right is named Joubert.

The reverse of the photo is inscribed 'India'.

Does anyone recognise where this photo was taken from the background or the headwear?

Hi David
I have had a good trawl through the web to see if there were any clues or similar images attributed to locations in India. Nothing came up unfortunately. However, looking closer at the image I am sure the tiger image is a tapestry, which was common in the 1800/ 1900s. It also seems to have a couple of what look like arrows in its neck, I may be wrong but it could be a hunting tapestry of a Bengal tiger. The tapestries were on frames and could be moved around from different rooms or outdoors. As for the hats, well, they may be a version of an Elwood design called the Pith Tent Club, Elwood’s made hats from 1879 -1921. These were copied by French and German manufactures and were covered in straw or quilted. Alas, the Indian location is alluding me at present. I have enclosed a few examples to view.

Kind regards

Dave

Perhaps Dewald Nel can look in the Boer POW ledger and see which of the dozen or so Indian POW camps burger Scholtz was sent to?

But the gentleman in the photo would have returned to find his entire family had been wiped out in the Potchefstroom concentration camp. His family's names were:
Master David Herkules Scholtz (Schultz) Unique ID: 18233
Miss Elizabeth Neelje Scholtz Unique ID: 18230
Master Francois Jacobus Scholtz Unique ID: 18228
Miss Hester Elizabeth Scholtz (Hester Izabella) Unique ID: 18232
Ms Neelje Elizabeth Scholtz Unique ID: 18229
Miss Neeltje Elizabeth Scholtz (Nellie [DBC 75]) Unique ID: 18227

Also in the same concentration camp were some other families from Roodekop farm. The following all died there:
Miss Christina Elizabeth du Toit Unique ID: 20031
Miss Hester Isabella du Toit Unique ID: 20032
Mr Cornelis Lodewiekus Johns Grobler (Groblaar) Unique ID: 10575
Miss Anna Maria Swanepoel Unique ID: 19588
Miss Maria Glodina Swanepoel Unique ID: 19591
Miss Maria Glodina Swanepoel Unique ID: 19590
Mr David Johannes J van Rensburg Unique ID: 17210
Miss Neeltje Elizabeth J van Rensburg Unique ID: 17211
Miss Anna M C Visser Unique ID: 21061
Master Jacobus Gysbertus Johannes Visser Unique ID: 21055
Miss Maria Elizabeth Visser Unique ID: 21051
Mrs Maria Elizabeth Sophia Visser Unique ID: 158320

There were also five people from Roodekop farm who were in the Potchefstroom concentration camp but somehow survived:
Master Johannes Visser Unique ID: 158322
Miss Maria Visser Unique ID: 158324
Miss Neelje Elizabeth Visser (Milge Eliz [DBC 75]) Unique ID: 21052
Miss Francina Kruger Visser Unique ID: 158321
Master Andries Visser Unique ID: 158323

I exhausted Google & Bing regarding their images of Indian Pow camps (Boer interns)
couldn't find a match. Exact camp would be helpful if someone can provide the detail on the two Gentlemen in the photograph (Assuming they are POW's) However, no guarantee it will help solve the image location.
