Dear Colleagues,

I read that two Boer officers, Veldkornet Vercueil and Kommandant Christian Fourie, fought on the upper Tugela in Jan 1900; I believe they were with the ZAR forces, but I don't know which Commando they were with.
I would be most grateful if anyone can assist me!

many thanks
Rob Davidson

Hi Rob
On p81 of "Die Helde-Album....." by P H S van Zyl it is stated: "Dit was op 'n kop naby Acton Homes wat deur die Engelse so hewig gebombardeer is dat genl. Christiaan Fourie en veldk. Jan Vercueil se Middelburgers dit verlaat het."

Perfect, Henk!

Christiaan Fourie and Jan Vercueil gave permission to the three famous Edwards Reconnaissance Scouts, Henri Slegtkamp, Jack Hindon and Jan de Roos to go forward.
It's very useful to have confirmation from another source.
From studying the sources, the battlefield, and targets within artillery range [<3750m] of Three Tree Hill, I judge the spot of their heroic stand to be on Platkop, approx. GPS -28.61936, 29.46221.
I hope to be out there again soon if you want to walk to the spot together.
A cairn or memorial to the three heroes is long overdue.
Rob
