Thomas Mahon 3 years 6 months ago #76976

Good morning,

I'm looking for records of Thomas Mahon, born 1873 in Port Elizabeth. I believe he served in the 2nd Boer War and WW1. I'm also told he was awarded a DSM and was a WO1.

I'm not sure who he served with. Any help will be appreciated.

Regards

Hello garthtighe67

I believe the Thomas Mahon you are looking for is-
Thomas Mahon 81252 Royal Artillery.
Born in circca 1872/73 Port Elizabeth South Africa.
He attested for the Artillery aged 16 years of age in November 1890.
He was 5 foot 6 inches tall, 131 pounds in weight, fresh complexion, blue eyes and red hair.
His religious denomination was Roman Catholic.
He served for 12 years and 225 days. 9 of those at home postings and 3 years and 223 days in South Africa. He was promoted to Corporal in 1895 and made Sergeant in September 1902. He was awarded the QSA medal with 3 clasps. Wittebergen, Cape Colony and Transvaal. Also the KSA with 1901-1902 date bars.
He was also awarded the medal for distinguished conduct in the field.
His medal rolls state he was in the 77th Battery Royal Field Artillery. However his entry for his DCM states 78th Battery Royal Field Artillery, rank of Corporal and another states Sergeant.
His Father was William Joseph Mahon of York Street Hull
And he married Elizabeth Shenstone of Coventry in May 1896.
So this could be your man.
Will try and research his WW1 history in the next few days.
Regards
Dave.

Info taken from the online auction site.

A Boer War D.C.M. group to Warrant Officer 1st Class Thomas Mahon, Royal Artillery: Distinguished Conduct Medal, Edward VII (81252 CPL: T. MAHON. 78TH BTY: R.F.A.); Queen's South Africa Medal, second type, 3 clasps: Cape Colony, Transvaal, Wittebergen (81252 SERJT: T. MAHON. 77TH BTY; R.F.A.); King's South Africa Medal, two dated clasps (81252 SERJT: T. MAHON. R.F.A.); British War Medal 1914-20 and Victory Medal (87166 W.O. CL. 1. T. MAHON. R.A.); all very fine or better.
Mentioned in Lord Robert's despatch of 4th September 1901. Transferred to the 1st Class reserve 6th June 1903. Re-enlisted 12th April 1915. Discharged owing to sickness (permanently unfit) 24th September 1917 and entitled to Silver War Badge.

There we are, if you have a few grand to spare with commission.
You could be lucky enough to own his medals.
Personally, I think £700 to a £1000 estimate is a little optimistic
You can try a cheeky bid on Tuesday's auction at Woolley and Wallis on line auction.;)
