I have a few questions:
I have A. Nowland as leaving Uralla to enlist and he was apparently accepted.
I found an A. Nowland listed as a cook with "A" Sqn Bushmens Contingent.
Are the cooks always listed with the contingent names? I can't see him listed again with the contingents that are leaving.
Are the cooks given a service number, are they listed in the nominal rolls and were they issued any medals?
There was a protest against him going and I don't know if that was upheld or not - maybe that's why I can't find him again - I'm not sure where to look to find out. I have looked through Trove, Murray's Nominal Rolls, the Archives.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi,
There is an Archibald Frederick Nowland in Oz Boer War Data.
Have a look at that site.

Hi Jim. I found that fellow but I don't think it's him - it might be though, you never know! - so I have kept it aside just in case.

Hi Kaya,

I have previously read that you are researching local men from the Uralla (NSW) district, so I believe that the Citizen Soldier that you are looking for is 259 Trooper Albert Edward Nolan, ā€œCā€ Squadron of the New South Wales Citizens' Bushmen.

Please have a look at the following link on Trove at the first row and 10th line from the bottom you will see the entry for Albert Edward Nolan of Uralla.

Kaya
The Smith roll for the NSWCB shows Albert Edward Nolan came from Rockhampton, QLd.
The Smith roll for the NSWCB shows "493 Tpr. Nowland (no c/n) as Cook for A sqn; on nominal roll but did not embark. Possibly "511 James Nolan".
There is another entry for "511 Tpr. James Nolan" DoB 8/2/70 Cook, born Liverpool UK, latterly of Sydney NSW. Not on embarkation roll but pay record says Return to Aust 6/1901 and discharged 27/9/01. Possibly served Driscolls Scouts and did not return to Australia.
Regards
IL.

Hi Trev. Yes, I did consider that possibility. However, I found both A. E. Nolan (C Sqn) and A. Nowland (A Sqn) listed in the same article 26.02.1900. That's where A. Nowland is listed as the cook for A Sqn. I have done A. E. Nolan's profile so I have all his details and they all check out ok. I just wondered if the protest for A. Nowland stood up and that's why I couldn't find him again. I notice I have another reply from LinneyI so I will check out his suggestions as well. Thank you for helping.
