BALLARD, Brig Gen Colin Robert (1868-1941)
Staff Officer, 6 Corps, Mounted Infantry,
Second Boer War, South Africa, 1900-1902

Can someone perhaps help me. My colleague, Dr. Vicky Heunis, needs a photo for a project of Brig Gen Colin Robert Ballard during the Boer War.

Thank you

Elmarie

Perhaps the Liddell Hart Military Archives might have one? It does have an archive collection of his, and has three letters home from South Africa, but no mention of a photo of him.

Or try the regimental museum.

Search for Ballard at norfolkmuseumscollections.org/#!/home . There are some team shots of 1 Bn in Ireland just before WW1. I did not notice a list of names but I imagine as CO he is the chap front and centre. Anyway, it might be a place to start. A high resolution scan for personal research only was about 10 UKpounds about five years ago. It was more if you were planning to publish the photo.

Ballard is mentioned but not shown in volume 2 of the regimental history 1914-1919 (Petre, 1924b) but not volume 1. There is no image of him in the first 8 issues of the regimental journal, 1927 and 1930.

Don't expcet too much from the Museum. Underfunding and covid have stretched the staff to the limit. On the good side however, the Museum has loaded lots of (so far only WW1 period) documents on to the searchable online site, The Ogilby Muster. There are plenty of Ballard hits but no photo.

Rob.
