Hello all,

Can anyone advise whether service records of any sort survive for the South African Light Horse, and if they do, where they are held? Thanks in advance for any advice on this issue.

Best wishes,

Jim

Jim,

In addition to the nominal roll, which is not great for the SALH, the attestation papers for the SALH are held in several boxes of WO126 at The National Archives in London. They are not available online.

I have copies of the surnames A - D, three boxes worth, if that helps?

Best wishes
David

Hello Mike and David

Thanks for this feedback; I had located the portion of the site Mike mentioned, and it is quite useful, but I'd be happy to take you up on any assistance you might be able to offer, David; my man is 1211 SERJT: H. CAMPBELL. S.A. LT HORSE. His QSA has clasps 'Cape Colony', 'Tugela Heights', 'Orange Free State', 'Relief of Ladysmith', 'Laing's Nek', 'Belfast', 'South Africa 1901'. Henry Campbell was slightly wounded at Murraysburg on 11 January 1901, and he was mentioned in dispatches in the London Gazette of 8 February 1901. If you have a copy of his attestation papers in your box, I'd be pleased to get a scan of this!

Best wishes,

Jim

Hello David,

Thanks very much for this - it adds a bit to Campbell's story, as it is nice to know when he joined the unit and which squadron he initially served with, and with luck, it will help me identify some new research leads!

Kind regards,

Jim
