My father was born in Wepner. His father was from Germany. My gran ran a hotel in Wepner and would tell me Boer war stories. The British always promised to pay, and never did. The boers never paid. She never mentioned my Grandfather, I think it was because he may have been with the boers but I am led to believe all records were destroyed. He arrived in SA in 1883. I have his passport and release papers from the German army. He is buried in Wepner.,

I think the chaps name was John Diederick Bulter, a Hotel Keeper in Wepener who died in 1910. He was born in Hamburg, Germany and was married to an Elizabeth Jane Hackwell.

Regards

Rory

Rory, You are correct. He was my grand father, ex German Army; I have his release paper. Met my gran met him in Smithfield. She was a Hackwell from Bristol. My gran used to tell me boer war stories. When boers or Brits stayed in the hotel they were all polite. Brits promised to pay but never did. Boers just stayed, no payment. My dad was born 1905, his brother Cecil was born 1995. Also a sister who died 1897. I also have an account of the Jammerdrif battle by Johan Crhstiaan Lock.
There was a picture of the hotel in the Wepner Lord Fraser Guesthouse pub.

Hi Rory
Yes you are quite right. I am curious to know how you found the information.
I found my grandfathers grave in Wepener cemetery. My brother says he fought with De Wet, which sound logical as he was a trained German soldier?
Also my grans father a Hackwell is buried in Smithfield. Cheers
