I am currently following a line of enquiry as follows:

I know that recruits to the Bodyguard were attested in South Africa and the preference was for local men who were good shots and had a competent level of horsemanship as required from recruitment adverts in the SA press.
My question is, would recruitment appeals for the Bodyguard have been posted in the UK press to attract suitable recruits?

I hope this isn't a daft question! But I know that units such as Scottish Horse did some recruitment in the UK.

Any information would be most gratefully received.

Cheers Steve

Hello Steve,

Not a daft question at all.

I think not.

Even without a subscription, you can search the British Newspaper Archive

www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/search...ecountrycounts=false

The snippet from the article that is visible shows the entries relates to the exploits or casualties, rather than an recruitment.

There may have been more generic advertisements to join the Colonial units?

Best wishes
David
