I'm putting the finishing touches to my story on Alexander Stewart Crum, OC of the 67th Coy, 18th I.Y. , R.F.F.

He was invalided back to England and didn't qualify for any date clasps - my question is... where would he be in the shipping records? I can't seem to find him, so any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Rory

Hi Rory,

I have on occasion been tracking officers in the same way and found that although very many are mentioned by name, some aren't. Instead, having knowledge of dates of events in South Africa and subsequent dates in England I have been able to identify a ship that they must have travelled on.

Do you have such dates of events?

Ian

Sadly no Ian -- I don't - there is only the medal roll which says he was invalided and a paragraph in a book written by a Trooper in the 18th IY which is almost a history of their movements since disembarking at Beira.

Crum is mentioned as having been invalided but no date is provided - my best guess is somewhere in September/October 1900 - just after they crossed the Limpopo and headed for Mafeking. I know they were there on 20 October because one of Crum's company died of enteric there.

His medal also has the Cape Colony clasp so he must have crossed the river from Rhodesia into the Cape before being sent home.

Rory,

I'll check the casualty roll, but what about his service record? Do you have this?
