Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has perhaps ever copied the attestation papers to the Border Scouts which can be found in the WO126 series.

I am looking for a chap named Percy Laing who served as: 490 S.Sjt. Maj. P. Laing. He also served with the CP and received the DOM clasp to his QSA.

Thanks very much

Adrian,

I have Border Scouts A - I :(

In case this is of any use, here is his biography from the Defence of Mafeking draft book:

Born in Cape Town, 24 December 1875. Trade: Riveter. Enlisted in the DEOVR (Private) and served in the Bechuanaland Rebellion 1896-7 (CGHGSM (1) Bechuanaland). Enlisted in CP D1 (1317 Private), 8 September 1897. Discharged 21 February 1901. Also served BoSc (490 SSM) 22 February 1901 to 31 May 1902 and CP D2 (1514). Name crossed out on CP D2 KSA roll as issued by BoSc, 8 August 1906. A letter sent from Mafeking on 13 April 1900 to Mrs Laing, Melton, England, is known.

A man of this name died 9 February 1951 in Kimberley, aged 71. Described as a Guard at De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited and a veteran pensioner. He resided at 69a Dutoitspan Road, Kimberley. The death notice says he was born in England and was married. He possibly married Hendrika Johannes Loock in Kimberley, 3 May 1919, at which time he was described as a miner in Kimberley, aged 39. Forename sometimes Paul.

I will look up his attestation paper when I am next at TNA.

Thanks very much David.

I have found documents relating to all you have supplied in your reply. However the CP papers show DOB as 1876.

There are also 2 sets of attestation papers to him in Capetown, one with the forename Paul and the other Percy...

Thanks again.
