Can anyone help pinpoint the site where Captain Ernest Beachcroft Beckwith Towse won a VC at “Mount Thaba” on 30 April 1900?
I am trying to help a descendant of the hero who wants to visit the site, but I am away from my books for a few days. Any maps would help a lot!
Thanks in anticipation
Rob

Hope this helps:

On the 30th April, 1900, General Hamilton’s troops met strong opposition from General de Wet’s forces holding positions astride Hout Nek, about 20 km north of Thaba Nchu. Seven kilometres south-west of the Nek is a large, plateau-like, 180 in-high hill known then as Mount Thaba[3]

3. On the 1964, 1:50 000 Trigonometrical Survey map this feature is shown as “Toba”.

Thanks Sturgy! That’s a great article about this hero, I think your location is definitely correct, approx GPS -29.0680, 26.7414
If the descendant is fit then it should be possible to take him to the spot.

Hi Rob, it's a pleasure.

Please can you share some pictures from the site; it would be great to "see" it.

What a great man; here is a Facebook link from "History Hits" with a great photo of him; you can see the effects of having lost his eyesight from this VC action.

His ancestors have a lot to be proud of given all the work he did for the blind!
