Hello all,
I’ve been checking recently a few family members to see if they served in wars, done First World War now on to Boer. I would like to know if there is a definitive way of checking if a family member lines up with a certain soldier. Buxton, William 4793, Private, 1st dragoons guards. I’d like some help ,as I’m new to this era, to see if he was born in Nottingham and in 1871 and I’ll research from there if it adds up. Any guidance or help, as I’m new to this period and researching within it would be greatly appreciated!
Regards,

6thSherwoods,

I had a look for service papers for William Buxton but failed to find any. These would have given you more genealogical information to answer your question.

I can see his Boer War records. This man served in the Great War, serving in the same unit with the same number. Men were often given a new number when then re-enlisted meaning that they have papers filed under a different regimental number but that seems not to be the case here.

Without service papers, your next route will probably be the census records to try to follow him.

Good luck!
