This souvenir was presented to 3676 Sergeant George Edward RANSOM, 16th Lancers, by men detained at Matjiesfontein Concentration Camp.

Matjiesfontein was home to a large Remount Depot, which may explain why a member of a cavalry regiment was stationed there. One wonders what Ransom did to earn the friendship and respect of the Matjiesfontein "Undesirables".

Matjiesfontein camp does not appear on the British Concentration Camps database, so the list of 71 names might be useful for genealogists.
