I am trying to research my great great grandfathers service history. he served with the 5th battalion Militia rifile brigade. and i tried to search on this forum and online and have been able to find very little to no info about what they did in the second boer war. so i thought i would just make a post to ask about them.

very thankful for any info.

Welcome to the forum
Apologies for the delay in replying to your post.
It looks like the 5th Battalion Rifle Brigade were present in South Africa towards the latter stages of the conflict. I had a look at the South Africa Field Force casualty list and the 5th only appear with casualties from the 1st of January 1902 until 31st of May 1902. The majority of those casualties died from disease. The Battalion would have been engaged in skirmishes whilst protecting railways, block houses and mines.
I have enclosed the casualty list for you. You maybe able to research some of those areas mentioned for further information. You could try and contact the Rifles museum, they maybe be able to help. rgimuseum.co.uk

wow this is amazing to see all this. i was wondering what my great great grandfather would have been doing in the second boer war so this is very interesting to see. very very thankful
i will read through the link regarding the Lace Diamond Mine tonight!

and about them being there in the latter part of the conflict would match his record it says he Embarked in 21st December 1901 and Disembarked 3rd October 1902.

i will also definately try to contact the museum about this too !

once again cannot thank you enough!
