Hello Forum members

I am looking for some information pertaining to 187 Trooper E L Jones
Natal Mounted Rifles. A Elandsglatte and Ladysmith defender.

Your help as always is very much appreciated.

Best wishes

Dave,

Beyond appearing on the NMR list of Ladysmith Defenders, the Natal Volunteer Record shows E.L. Jones as "invalided to end of war". Given that this little volume was published in Durban at the end of 1900, the words "end of war" were clearly somewhat premature. Indeed, Jones must have returned to duty during the conflict, as I see he was entitled to the South Africa 1901 clasp.

Included in the book is a short history of the work of the NMR during the ABW which ends on 8 Oct 1900. Given the brevity of the piece, there is, unsurprisingly, no mention of Tpr Jones.

I imagine he was invalided as a result of hardships sustained during the siege. Perhaps a victim of enteric.

Neville

Neville, thank you for the information regarding the Invalided reference.

David (Smethwick) I was aware of all of your doings ;)
I should have explained, I was trying to find out if any attestation papers are extant for the NMR. Thought it might lead me to a Christian name.

Thanks for looking.

FWIW, the Natal Archives have deceased estate files for four people name E.L. Jones. The only one whose dates fit was Edward Llewellyn Jones, born in Westville in 1868, died in Empangeni in 1951. At the time of his death he was a salesman in a trading store.

You could e-mail the NMR, and ask what information they have about 187 Tpr E.L. Jones : nmr-1854.co.za/contact-us .
