I hold the British War Medal for 200853 Colour Sergeant (later CQMS) Herbert William Glover of 2/5 Royal Warwickshire Regiment. In his 1914 attestation record (as 3305) he states that he had previously served in the "Royal Warwicks" until "termination of engagement". Indeed I assume he must have had experience, being promoted sergeant on the day of his enlistment and colour sergeant two weeks later. He was discharged in 1919, having also received the Victory Medal and Silver War Badge #B303351.

My first thought was that this previous service relates to the Second Boer War. In doing some research, I find that there was an 8186 Sergeant H W Glover who was part of the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, and went to South Africa as part of the 1st Volunteer Service Company, 2nd Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment. He received the QSA with Joh, DH, Belf, CC, OFS, and SA 1901.

Considering the similarity of name and unit (I believe 5th Warwicks was the inheritor of, and quartered in the same location as, the 1st Volunteers), could this be the same man? I have looked for enlistment and service records for the earlier H W Glover, but have come up blank. Thanks for any assistance or tips!

Quite definitely the same man.

His WW1 service papers note a re-imbursement of his fare returning from Canada to enlist.

Using access to newspaper archive via Findmypast I found numerous mentions in Birmingham newspapers 1900 - 1914. as Volunteer and as secretary of Warwickshire South Africa Volunteer Veterans Association. !914 mention is presentation of gold watch as he leaves to go to Canada.
I can post the links but don't have time at the moment to copy and post the articles.

Thank you! I believe his mother and siblings went to Canada with him, although they stayed while he possibly didn't return after the First World War. Which newspaper archive did you use? I've been trawling newspapers.com but clearly didn't catch everything; I don't have access to Findmypast.

Finding Glover's regimental home in both wars, Thorp Street Drill Hall, to now be a car park was slightly disappointing...
