I'm currently working on a short encyclopaedic biography of Vice-Admiral Reginald Charles Prothero CB MVO, known to one and all as "Prothero the Bad". Captain of Doris and flag captain to Sir Robert Harris during the ABW, his reputation as an eccentric only grew after his wounding at Graspan - which has been noted in these forums several times. Not to mention his habit of literally throwing midshipmen off his bridge!

While I have identified several photographs of Prothero (with Harris' staff and with the Doris officers), I have only one image of him I would describe as vaguely high quality, which I attach here. Does anybody happen to have or know of any other good quality photographs or illustrations of "one of the most alarming persons ever to command a warship"? Many thanks!

You may already be aware of this - there is a Prothero public family tree on Ancestry which has several photographs of him in the gallery - they show him at various ages but none of very high quality. What is of high quality is a painting of him in uniform done by one of his grandsons.

Hi, I hadn't thought of checking ancestry. I've seen most of the photographs elsewhere, and I agree they are no better than what I already have. Unfortunately I wouldn't be able to use the painting because it's still in copyright.
