As someone who accesses the QSA and KSA information held on the Ancestry site, I thought it would be useful to note down the errors and omissions in the index as these can have a detrimental effect on the ability to access the information held by the site.

Having the medals rolls on Ancestry is quite amazing so I think it is helpful to identify ways in which the information can be improved.

As examples:

O'okiep Volunteers appear as 'O'akiep Volunteers Attached To Namaqualand Town Guard Battalion'
BV Carbineers can appear as 'B V Carbvins'
Royal Scots Fusiliers can appear as '2nd R S Fusiliers' and '2nd Roayl Scots Fusiliers'
2nd Middlesex Regiment as '2 Middex'
20th Field Hospital, RAMC as 'Issuex' (itself a miss-spelling for Issued, a list of issued medals)
Chaplains Department as 'Chapmains Department'
2nd KFS as '2nd Kitcheners Fighting Scots'
BRCS as 'British Red Crops Society'
Daniels' Kuil TG as 'Daniels Knil Town Guard'
Naauwpoort TG as 'Naauwport Town Guard'
3rd Battalion PWV (South Lancashire) Regiment as '3rd BaLight P W V'
Queenstown Town Guard as 'Q T Guard'

Most value will be added by concentrating on the unit names. With the difficulty in reading some of the medal rolls, there were always going to be problems reading the recipients and these will be too numerous to list. There is though a striking example from the very first page of the index, where the 'Duke of Muelborough' is listed as a member of the Divisional Head Quarter Staff, Imperial Yeomanry.

How surprising to read of the errors on Ancestry! Do they correct errors that are brought to their attention?
