Hello Gentlemen,
Any thoughts on the PAOCV Artillery regarding research? out of my comfort zone here, not sure where to start, do papers still exist for members of this unit? Served in Transkei during Basutoland Rebellion 1880-81, the Langberg campaign 1897 and the Boer War.
Thoughts most welcome!

I have a friend who has a paricular interest in all things to do with South African artillery regiments. I will ask him if he has anything on the Prince Alfred's one that can be easily shared on this forum.

Hello Frank,

I can add that there is next to nothing in the Cape Archives pertaining to the PAOCVA. The best I found were weekly returns and the odd mention in LSGC medal registers etc. No attestation papers at all.The most researchable units are:

CP- Attestation papers and Enrolment Registers
CMR- Defaulters books which show enrolment and discharge dates as well as medals
CPG Regt- attestation papers

This does not mean however, that there is nothing at all. It just takes for ever to scratch through boxes and boxes of files, registers and the likes.

Good morning gentlemen,
Okay, thanks to you both, I may have to be content with just a verified medal then, I had a gap in my single specimen collection which I've just filled!
It was a Cape of Good Hope GSM, clasp Transkei, given there were only 550 something issued, I thought I would get the next one I saw regardless of unit.
I went to an OMRS fair here a few weeks ago and to my surprise there was not a single example to be found in the whole room.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Frank.

Frank,

I have copied all the available application forms for the CGHGS medal. There were about 440 or so still in existance out of the original 5500 odd. What is the chaps name. You might just be lucky !!!!
